First Home Buyers — common questions
What government help is available for first home buyers in SA?
Support can include the First Home Owner Grant and stamp duty relief for eligible buyers, plus national schemes such as the Home Guarantee Scheme. Eligibility and amounts change over time — we'll point you to the current rules and official sources for your situation.
How much deposit do I need as a first home buyer?
Some loans allow a deposit from around 5%, and certain government guarantee schemes can reduce the deposit needed without LMI for eligible buyers. A larger deposit generally means lower repayments and fewer costs.
What is Lenders Mortgage Insurance (LMI)?
LMI is insurance that protects the lender (not you) when you borrow with a smaller deposit, usually below 20%. It's a cost to you and can be paid upfront or added to the loan. Some buyers avoid it through a guarantor or an eligible scheme.
